Here is what I have.
Whirlpool stove model #RF376PXDN1

I need to replace a burner. The part number for the element is 8203568.

It is a 1700 watt element

Due to the high cost of a new element I was wondering if it would be ok to use a different size?

I can get a 1500w for $20 instead of the $125 they want for the original size element.

My question is, can I change sizes of element? Thanks for any help.

Is this the typical surface coil-type element? Why so much money, if so?

If you are asking, based on safety - I can't see anything wrong with doing it. I'd just take your old one with you and lay it on the counter next to the new one, before you buy, and closely compare. I used to buy used elements off of various mfg. stoves all the time.

It could be possible that your control. may no longer produce the exact temp anymore according to the settings you select, But high would still be high and glow, and I'd imagine the other settings would be close enough.

You might check on a generic replacement instead of a name brand also. Diameter, mounting style, etc, may dictate what is available. See your local appliance repair store for assistance....

it is not the regular coil style. It is a smooth top stove and these elements mount under the top.

I suspect that the 1500 watt element is for the smaller burners and the 1700 watt is for the large burner(s). If you were to put the small element in the large element space, it would heat unevenly and a large pot or skillet would only be heated in the center.
