I am about to refinish my red oak floors and I want to stain them Dark Walnut. So do I water pop or not? I did some tests on a few straps of wood. One set of boards I water popped and then added the stain. The second set of boards I didn't water pop and just added stain. The water popped sample came out really dark, too dark, a really rich dark brown. But on the non-water popped set, it came out way too light. I am hoping for a mid brown color that still shows the grain of the wood.
Therefore, I am tore on what to do. Should I try the water popping, but choose a lighter stain to compensate for it going darker?
