Google Documents or just use Gmail and attach to e-mails you save as drafts or send to yourself so you can store them in folders, what Gmail calls labels.

Depending on what you need - you might want to try out https://www.getdropbox.com/

If you use multiple computers and want to be able to get at the data from work, home, or your laptop - it will store files for you and sync them between all the locations.

You don't have to use the sync features though - so you can just use it to hold your stuff (up to 2gb with the free account)

I have used wuala before. You can get it at Wuala - Secure Online Storage - Backup. Store. Share. Access Everywhere. (http://www.wuala.com/)

I think you have to log in every month though so you wont lose your files.

But as of now, I only use Google Docs, Gmail and Picasa. It's easy to search files in Gmail.

I have looked for free online storage and if you carefully read the terms for them you will find a big difference in what security level they will commit to compared to a site that charges a minimal fee.
Deleting files if you don't log in is a good example.

If you are referring to picture files, considering many will run out of a burning house with a box of pics you can't exactly do that if an online service burns and crashes!

If you open up a Hotmail account they give you whats called skydrive. It includes 25 gb of free storage. I have been using it to store photos, documents and backing up programs like quicken for a few years with no problems.
I also have a external usb My Book hard drive backup whichs works well.
