I made a mistake and now I need to correct it. I sealed the butt edges of a piece of wood I wanted to stain with epoxy sealer BEFORE staining it. The epoxy bled into the surface of the wood and the stain will not "take" in those areas. It looks horrible. This was a really expensive piece of wood and if there's any way for me to salvage it, I want to. Because the areas are irregular, it will be difficult (if not impossible) to paint the area that doesn't take the stain with a darker color without bleeding into the area that did take the stain. Suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is tinted polyurethane but I doubt that would be any easier than painting since it's applied much the same way.Maybe a wipe on gell stain or something like that. But you won't really be able to stain it as long as the wood is sealed.

Sometimes you can apply the stain and then take sandpaper [while the stain is wet] and get the problem areas to accept the stain. Be sure to sand with the direction of the wood grain!
