Getting a anti freeze smell in cab of truck.Not all the time and just at start up,also heat is not constant at times it blows hot then cool then hot again. I'm guessing heater core .Am I correct or could it be thermostat?

Sounds like you are right about the heater core. You may also have a t-stat problem causing the heat variation. Low radiator can also cause erratic heating.

they are known for for heater core leaks.
'not' an actual 'diy' project-unless you are quite the auto repair type guy.(the dash has to come out)
if you look around in the forum you will find a guy with a 99 with the same concern.possible a p/m to him may help you decide 'if' you want to try it.
