Hello All,
I am looking to get the exterior of my newly built detached garage buttoned up. This is my first home and first complete building project, 100% DIY from the dirt up, so I apologize in advance if my questions are unclear, dont use the proper terminology, or just plain dont make sense!
We want to side the entire garage in vinyl siding, with the exception of the bottom 3-4 feet of the North and West walls, where we would like some type of stone. We have not decided exactly what kind of stone we would like yet, and were hoping to put it off until next year. I have two questions:
1.) I understand that I would put vinyl starter strip on at the 3-4' mark, and side up from there. What I dont understand is how I "finish" the corner where the bottom 3-4' is stone on one wall, and the entire wall is vinyl siding on the other wall. Does the vinyl corner extend all the way to the bottom of the wall, even on the rock side? Do I start the corner piece at 3-4' up, then use J channel for the bottom 3-4'?
2.) Since we wont be doing the rock until next year, what can I do to weather-proof the area that the rock will be installed? The inspector will not let me leave it as is, Tyvek over OSB, so I need to do something with it. Can I just install the cement backer board? Are they weather proof?
Thanks in advance!

The corner siding could wrap both walls, the one where the siding goes all the way to the ground and the N wall where you'll leave 3-4' for the stone. Once you decide what stone to use, faux or real, you can butt right against the vinyl corner and work your way to the opposite corner. Some of the stone edge will be exposed but it should look fine.
