What should I look for in order to fix this problem? I have to prime the pool pump myself every time and then manually turn it on. Is this common?

There is an air leak some where in your line or pump. When pump is on and primed, turn pump off and watch all around pump lid, fittings, ect and see if water sprays out a little.

Hmmm... thanks, will do when I get home.

Does an air leak necessarily mean that there is a water leak as well?

not necessarily if it is near the pump and it is on the suction side it will pull air but only when you shut it off you might see a little leak from pressure built up. good luck
