Hello,
I have crawled up inside my brick chimney and located a few small leaks (near the top). There are a lot of gaps in the mortar on the inner surface of the chimney (I can even see daylight through in a couple of places). The chimney is structurally sound. The leaks are not due to saturation -- leak starts within a few minutes of the rain coming down.
I want to try to seal the leaks from inside the chimney (appearance is not an issue). What should I use -- caulk, roofing tar, ... ???
Additional information: This has been a long term problem. The roof, flashing, exterior, cap, etc. all appear to be in good condition. I finally removed the wood stove and flue so I could climb up inside the chimney and see exactly where the water was coming in -- what a pain!
Cheers,
Don
