I'm looking to turn my dirt backyard into one my kids can play in. We just moved in before summer(Mesa, AZ), but haven't done anything with it yet. The backyard looks like it used to be well taken care of, but probably hasn't for many years.
It has a working sprinkler system, but the yard is all hard, compact dirt, except where runoff hits the ground, in which there's a little regular grass mixed in with weeds. There are also two fairly large pine trees that I've spent the last two weeks cleaning up pine needles.
I've read here and there about how to plant perennial rye for the winter and bermuda for the summer, but my problem is where to start?...
How do I prepare a dry, dirt yard for planting grass? Do I need to attempt removing the weeds before I put grass in? I know October is ideal for planting the rye, so my time is limited.
Should I even attempt putting grass under the pine trees? I've heard it's difficult for grass to grow under/near them.
Any tips anyone has on how to put grass in my yard would be helpful, but my biggest obstacle is how I should prepare the dirt ground before making the attempt at putting grass in.
Thank you!
