restez,...

what you will want to do is find out where your 2 end posts are going to go... (there is no magical tool to make these in line with each other except your preference and eye...)

where ever you want each end post to be,... that is where you will set them...

NOTE: the 2 end posts are going to be 16 feet apart from each other and you will need another post in the middle of them (which will be your line post)

after you have your 2 end posts set,... you can run a string from one end post to the other end post... (making sure the string is on the SAME SIDE on both posts)...

NOTE: string should be ran about 1 foot above the ground,...

once your string is ran... you will measure to the middle of the end posts (8ft) and set your line post, making sure the it is level to the string... (ex: when the bottom of the post is touching the string... the post should be level)

once you set the post and it is level to the string,... all three of your posts should be properly in line...

another skill used by some advanced fence isntallers is "BACK SETTING",... where you simply set the line post-by-post and use your eyes to look down the line and make sure the posts are in line AS YOU SET THEM... This is not recommended and usually only done if the installer forgets his string or some other crazy reason...

I hope this is usefull...

TIP FOR NEXT TIME: "Verify if the gate is built for a 48 inch OPENING, or if it is actually 48 inches wide..."

There are a few ways (mostly described in previous answers to your question) that you can make the gate work with that opening...

In my years of building fences, majority of the time, you will end up NOT likeing the gap between the gate and posts and you will end up digging up the posts and setting them again.

My recommendation would be to save the trouble and dis-satisfaction of not having it perfect and just pull one of the gate posts and re-set it so the entire opening is 48 inches... you will then be able to use the proper hinges and latch AND there will not be large gaps between your gate and posts.

hope this helps

If you DO in fact have a solid privacy (tongue and groove) style fence... the previous post would be correct... (however, I do not see vandels being able to push out the pickets of this style fence...

In order to give you the proper advice you are looking for, it owuld be best to know the MAKE AND STYLE of fence you had installed, OR have a picture of your fence posted so we can see the style.

There are MANY different vinyl fence designs out there... and it is almost impossible to explain how to fix your fence without KNOWING what we are fixing...

not in a sarcastic manor>>> That is almost like saying,... "hey,... can you fix my car? It broke down."

you should do fine if you measure the EXACT width of the gate and then add 3 inches to the width of your posts (inside to inside of posts)...

If you are unsure after viewing these responses, you are welcome to call our office and we will explain it to you in person... just go to our fence company website (http://www.anchorfenceonline.com) and click on contacts,... the office number is in there... (NOTE: website link is not for spam, I just dont want to publicly display our office phone number)

hope this helps

If you are buying SAND & Gravel (make sure you dont just buy rocks or peagravel...) Make sure it is a mixture... I would recommend also purchasing "cement MIX/morter" instead of quick drying concrete... and making your own cement mixture in a wheelbarrel... (3-5 scoops of sand & gravel, 1 scoop of cement... repeat till you have the wheel barel full then add water and mix...)

This method will give you a solid cement mixture and you will not have to worry about -X amount fo gravel and X amount of concrete,... then dirt...

simply set your post in the whole (make sure it is level) and them fill with the cement you mixxed... leave about 8 inches to fill with dirt and you should be more than happy with the results.

Im not saying you can not do it the way you first mentioned, however, I believe you would find this method easier, and alot more sturdy and solid way to set your psots...

If you have a question about how to do it, feel free to contact me at the office and I will explain it... visit the Anchor Fence website (http://www.anchorfenceonline.com) and click on the contacts link, my office number is there...

hope this helps
