just finished cutting down our (relatively) large weeping willow. It was about 18" at the trunk and it's roots had really begun to surface around the back yard. I also removed the trunk using a gas powered grinder (rental) and I removed all the surface roots I could find and the root ball.

My question is: Is this enough to make sure it doesn't come back? The tree is located in proximaty to the end of my septic field and I want to make sure the roots won't do any damage to the system. Is there something I should be putting down the crater that's left to make sure this thing stays dead?

Thanks

The roots will try to send up new shoots. If you don't let them grow, the roots will eventually run out of energy and no longer send up shoots. If it's in the path of your lawn mower, you have nothing to worry about. If it isn't just keep an eye out for tree growth and snip it down.

Last fall I cut a small tree down that was growing into my garage. I cut out the stump and removed as many of the large roots I could. I covered the area with landscape fabric and 2 inches of stone to prevent that area from becoming overgrown again. I had sections of the stump laying next to the garage and in the spring one started to sprout branches again.
