I'll be installing marble tile. I'm hoping that the front edge wouldn't be exposed to that much moisture, and I could install the tile directly on the edges of the particle board underlayment ( using 2 layers of 3/4"). i'll be putting the cement board on the top surface, but am curious of the necessity of cutting and installing a strip along the front edge also. Thanks in advance.

Lets back up.

There should be absolutely ZERO particle board in a tile installation. You need to replace the particle board with exterior glue grade AC plywood. You would then affix cbu to the front edge as well. Anywhere where tile will be installed need cbu.
