Hello,

I have cedar lap siding on a 100 year old house, and am wondering whether it's ok to caulk between the siding and the foundation. I've always been told it's a bad idea to caulk the bottom of lap siding shut as it needs to breathe to prevent mold from growing, but I wasn't sure about caulking between the siding and the brick foundation.

Thanks for any advice.

I would call it a bad idea. Water flows downhill. Any moisture or water that gets behind the siding needs to have a way out, and that's going to be at the bottom. Don't seal it.

Thanks Lefty. I'll keep it open.

If because of ants or bugs or air leakage reasons, you could help it a lot. Seal it in 12" sections, but not with caulking. Use backer rod, leaving a 1/2" gap for water outlet every 12": M-D Building Products at Lowe's: Backer Rod for Gaps and Joints 3/8" x 20' (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=41298-81-71464&lpage=none)
Comes in different thicknesses, get the thinest and twist braid it (2 pieces) which leaves a gap naturally so you could use it continuously as long as the weep holes are there. This doesn't stick to the wood siding allowing it to expand and contract with the seasons.
Be safe, Gary
