Brief story...moved into the house about a year ago. Noticed some parts of the lawn seemed like you were standing on something hard. Found some weird looking thing just under the grass line.
Yesterday, while doing my end of the year yard work, I found 3 more of the very firm fungi. At least, I think it's a fungus!
Any ideas?

almost looks like a toadstool to me. Is the ground lower right here? Like the kind of circular hole you would get from removing a medium sized tree?

No, the ground is pretty level in the yard. There are no stems/stalks on these things. They're at or just below grass-level.
