We recently moved into a house that was built in 2004-2005 but sat vacant for about 1.5 years. It has a geothermal system. We had the original installer come out in August to start the system back up and at that time he made sure the cooling system worked. Now it is getting colder and I switched the thermostat from cool to heat. Now the system runs more than it is off. It will run for 30-45 minutes, shut off for 15, then start up again. Is this normal for geothermal systems? It is not even that cold out yet. Do I need to pay the service fee and have the service guy come out again?

Did it run fine when it was cooling?
HP are going to run a bit longer than a standard gas heat system that you may of been used to.
What do you have for t-stat on this system? (Make and model)
Also, what is the make and model of the system?

I was gone the last few days. I will check the model # information tonight. The furnace is a Trane and the t-stat is Aprilaire.
The system seemed to work fine on cooling.

The t-stat is Aprilaire model 8365.
The furnace/hp is Trane model GSUJ0601BB1L100T.
Any advice would be great.

Ok, sorry for not getting back to you right away.
Your system is a two stage heat pump. so, when it's run in 1st stage, it's going to run longer (lower output) and give you better comfort in the home. When the t-stat see it can't keep up, it will go into 2nd stage (higher output) to help get up to temp.
It will be the same in cooling, in two stages.
So, the longer run time is normal.
