i am building a box out of mdf to go in the bed of my truck. i plan to paint the top half, the bottom half will be sprayed with bedliner.
the questions i have are about what kind of paint to use. all of the automotive primers i have seen are for metal, so i don't think they will work. if i use a primer made for wood will i be able to paint automotive paint over the top of it? if so, what kind of primer would work well? if not, is there any other kind of paint i could use that would look very similar to the automotive paint?

Welcome to the forums!
Will MDF [even with paint] hold up exposed to the elements?
I"d use a good grade of oil base exterior wood primer. I'm not sure if automotive paint would be compatible but would think that it would be ok over the oil primer. If for some reason it's not, you could get an exterior oil enamel tinted to the same color.
