Doors and Windows - Pocket door vs. regular door

I'm building a small interior office 10x12 and need to decide on a door type. Because the space is so small I've been considering a pocket type door because it will not take up as much inside wall space that needs to be kept clear so the door can swing open.

I've never installed a pocket door before and wonder what the pros and cons are of such a door?

Seems that one con is the wall space where the door resides needs to remain free of outlets and such. I also wonder about security and sound proofing when compared to a regular swing door? I'd like to put locks on this office door and I don't know if you can do that with a pocket door?

I suppose I could use a regular hinged door and swing it open to the outside of the room though that seems kind of odd...

From a security standpoint, it is difficult to make a pocket door pry resistent. Locks are actually for honest people anyhow. There are few door you can't open with a wonder bar. But definitely a space saver, if you have the door width of unused wall space(no ducts, wiring, plumbing). All of that can be relocated, but complicates things. Use only quality Johnson hardware, and their instructions are pretty clear if you have good mechanical skills.

Pocket doors let way more noise through/around them than a swing door. Never put one on a laundry room unless you have a very quiet washer and dryer. They need more attention, especially with children or pets. If sound-proofing, you always have the pocket (same size hole as door) that will not be insulated.

I agree with Bill and Gary. Your parameters almost totally leaves out pocket doors, although if you only needed wall space they are great. Not secure and they don't stop noise at all.

I would outswing the door before I went with a pocket door. That's really not all that odd when dealing with small rooms. But, at 10' X 12', the room isn't all that small, and I'm pretty sure that you can work around the 7 sq. ft. or so that you will lose to a 30" or 32" wide door.
