I have two great 5 X 8 wool oriental area rugs that I bought at one of the large discount stores. Appearance-wise they were perfect - but after a bit I started finding a whitish powder-like substance under them which appears to be from their backing, when picking up to vacumn/clean. What can I do to stop this from happening? I've actually thought of spraying white latex paint on the back - and the only thing I tried is applying a heavy layer of spray starch to one - w/no effect. I have a dog, so also do shampoo most rugs at least twice/year, so would need whatever fix to stand up to that.
