Just moved into my new house. When my sump pump turns off I hear a loud bang and upstairs. Is my sump pump dying? It is 8years old. Also I noticed that the sump pump has two cords plugged into the outlet. Is there two pumps?

Is there a check valve on the discharge of the pump?, a lot of them make a bang when the pump shuts off.

As far as the two cords go it could be the type of pump that uses a separate control line, you will need to look in the pit to see exactuly what you have.

Do a search for a silent check valve, these work very well and will eliminate the clunk when the pump shuts off. If the two cords are plugged into each other and then into the outlet, you have a pump cord and a switch cord. If the switch would ever fail you can run the pump manually by plugging just the pump in.

As others said if the plugs are connected to each other and then the outlet the one directly plugged in is probably for the float switch. Look in the pit to see if that's the case. From personal experience I can tell you now to buy a backup switch to keep just in case. Or a whole backup pump unit. Or both.
