Hey Folks,

Someone told me recently that you can use acetone to test for oil based paint.

I realize that there's a sticky about this subject above which mentioned denatured alcohol, or goof off.

I'm actually interested in whether or not anyone's tried acetone. My understanding is that if you rub a bit of acetone on the paint and it comes off it's oil. Is this the case, or is it the other way around (i.e.latex or other water based coating)?

It's been a long time since I've use any acetone but like most hot thinners it may have effect on both latex and oil. I suspect that acetone might have a minor effect on oil paint and may even disolve latex. Denatured alchol and cleaners like 'goof off' won't affect dry oil base paint but will soften latex. Acetone might give a false reading.

You're a good man Mark. I think I'll just stick with the denatured alcohol and Goof Off. Someone mentioned acetone and I happen to have some around. Rather not use it anyway because it does stink! Thanks again.
