Hi -
I live in NC and have tall fescue. I've already overseeded once back at the end of September and covered with a light dressing of topsoil. Some areas are coming in great, others...not so much. We did get hit with some good rain and I think some of the seed washed away into my sway.

I'm thinking of overseeding again on the areas that did not sprout, but I wonder if it's too cold now. The next three nights are going to be in the high 30's with the highs being around 60, then 70s again on Tuesday.

Weather: abc11.com: ABC11 First Alert 7 Day Weather Forecast for the triangle, Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, Cary (http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/feature?section=weather/forecast&id=6567752)

Can I still seed? Is it too late?

Do you also think that perhaps some of my seed was smothered by the topsoil?

Any chance those seeds are just dormant?

Thanks for any help!

Personally..having lived in VA..I'd say its too late..sorry. You normally need at least 2 weeks of 70's (soil temp..not air) to get good germination. Even then..if you don't get a good root base..it will just die off.

If you put no more than 1/4" of soil over the seed..then that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm in Richmond and the biggest problem is the leaves are about 3 weeks away at most from full heavy leaf fall and that's not enough time for seed to establish before they are covered by leaves, raked on etc.

This cool snap will be over by Tuesday then a warm enough week and who knows after that,I've seen it warm enough into Nov, but you just don't have enough time ahead of the leaves. If this were a spot where no leaves would have any impact I'd try it otherwise no.

Temp wise it's a crap shoot but the leaves will seal the deal.
