I have a rental property in which the prior tenant had cats and two children. I believe the 10 year old boy and/or the cats used an air duct as a urinal. The air duct is less than one year old and is not metal. It is flexible ducting almost like dryer venting, but larger in diameter.

Is there any way to clean it without replacing the duct or taking it down to clean it out?

Hmm, interesting question. If you can get a cleaner into the duct that would probably take care of it. There are a number of products that would probably do it, Urine Off is one that comes to mind. The trick might be getting it onto the offending places in the duct work. You could, I suppose, turn the fan on and apply it to the return duct and let it circulate to the duct/vent, but it would also go to the other ducts and may be to weak by the time it gets to the place you want it.

My heating contractor is going to replace the entire duct for less that $100. so that is the what I am doing. Thanks.

sounds like the best option...those flexible ducts are not to get 100% clean..not to mention if the urine has found its way thru the outer layer of the insulation it may of soaked into the insulation itself
