Hello
I am sorry to have sent two posts as I know you are busy.
For some reason I have been receiving a lot of junk mail in my alternate email address.
I have been opening it, copying the email address and putting it in my "Blocked" addresses.
I know it is dangerous to open an unknown but that is the only way I can get the domain.
I have forums and places which have this secondary address which I need to get valid information from, and I cannot remember all of them.
I thought of sending all my contacts a note about another address change but that leaves these other important sites out.
If I close this account the sites important to me with the address will not be able to reach me.
If I create a third account, I wwill have to check more than I do now.
Windows Lve Mail allows multilple email addres in one place but when you close it, it leaves the hotmail account not signed off. It is an issue they have to deal with. I need it as my default email program so I can "send to" and open hyperlinks.
What do you think of my current way of dealing with this and is there a simpler way of avoiding all this spam yet not making a mountain out of a molehill?
Thank you

I use Gmail only. They do a great job of filtering spam and Gmail can retrieve POP mail accounts such as those at your ISP also.

You might also want to set up disposable accounts at SneakyMail.com. The e-mail is forward to your inbox but you can always delete the account if you get too much junk. What you do is setup a different mail account for each site that you give your email addy to. If you notice it is attracting a lot of spam you just cancel the account.

Years ago I used POPFile - Automatic Email Classification - Trac (http://getpopfile.org/) and it worked very well. It was self leaning and in about a month reduced my spam by 90%. Been many years though so I can't comment on the current version.

It may be a problem at first but I think I may try Gmail.
Good suggestion and thanx.

oddly enough i use hotmail as my junk account for any sort of website that need verification, as i find hotmail filter to be weak at best, so consequently it the account that get spammed my ISP ( Verizon ) accounts, the ones i used for personal email and banking and so on, do not ( or rarely do ) mainly because i have set up a sub accounts off the primary master ( which i never use for anything ) and use thunderbird for filtering the other part of the equation is your browser and how you have it set up, i use firefox, and some add ons ( script blocker, adblocker

You should be able to add names to the blocked sender list without opening them (or at least having to copy and paste). Try right-clicking on it and see if there's a junk mail option there, or look up on the toolbar.
I have Verizon, and they do a pretty good job of blocking junk mail and I also use Hotmail and find they do a good job also, at least for me.

You may also be able to display mail in a "preview" window. All the info required for blocking (complete addresses and such) should be available. But I've never had to copy and paste any info to block spam...everything I've ever used you can just tag the mail and click a "SPAM" button...from then on all that stuff gets blocked.

I use AIM mail (just cause I've had the address for 15 yrs) for personal stuff and Gmail for business transactions and such.

Hello
If you are saying that when I click a message as 'junk' that it is blocked for coming to me again that is great. I do in fact do that but did not know it was then considered blocked. I thought that mail programs had to accumulate tons of an addresses before it considered it junk but maybe a personal account like mine may do as you say.
Most of the messages that bother me are in the junk mail folder but for some reason I am getting 20 a day and used to get three or four.
I will continue to just click delete in the junk folder and see if, by attrition, the junk will slow down.
My browser is configured as usual so that is ok.
Thank you all.

I use a free program called Cactus and after a short time of learning it is very good at removing spam. It does tend to have problems with large emails with attachments such as photos - I have to shut it down sometimes or it just hangs up the rest of the email.

The email addresses you are collecting from the spam are unlikely to send you much again, they are usually fake and one-offs so it is probably not worth your time to block them.

I guess I will just block all for a while and see if they go away. I did right click and see the domain;I then blocked it w/o opening it.

Be careful blocking domains, peterr. (Domains are after the @ symbol in an e-mail address: gmail.com, yahoo.com, verizon.net)

Before you block a domain, first make sure it isn't used by someone from whom you regularly receive e-mails or your friend's email will be dumped along with any others you receive from that domain.

Good point, Rick. I had not thought of that.
I think I will gt another address and send it to my contacts and change the infornation in my forums etc.
I may have already blocked a domain of a friend so a change will be wise.
Thank you for the advice.

I at one time had trouble with my ISP pop server email account and had to change email address but I realize now it was my own fault.
Now I get almost zero spam.

There are a couple of reasons I think did it.
The biggest was to get "friends" and family to stop sending me anything that required them to enter my email address on a web site for me to receive it.

I asked everyone who emails me regularly to stop forwarding emails they get that have multiple recipients like lame joke emails or power point presentations that are designed to either change my life or make me cry!..........Copy and send to only me.
A couple of friends who had gov't office jobs have now retired and don't have the time to do this any more! ...... Know how long it takes to make a PP presentation?)

I register for forums and services under my Hot Mail address and only use my main POP address for trusted people and sites.
I just checked my Hot mail account and have about ten spam emails being sent to my junk folder a day without having to set any filters up and none going to my inbox.............I think i can thank all other uses who set their delete function to report the email as spam for this.

Thank you, Greg, for the tips.
I will notify my contacts about those forwards.
I am beginning to see a reduction as I tightened my filters to my preference.
If it does not subside I will change but I'll give it another week.
I have a convenient list to do so if necessary.
Again, thank you for the advice.
