Painting - Repainting old flacky paint wood windows

Hi,

We are repainting the outside of our house and all is okay except we have some windows which are the old wooden ones which you pull the bottom half up to open them. I think they used to have a weight inside each side to help this.

Anway, they have a few coats of old hard paint on and some areas quite flacky. The putty around the glass is also broken and hard.

What is the best way to attack this so we can repaint them?

Scrape and sand off what you can and then coat all the raw wood with an oil base exterior wood primer. Once dry, you can reglaze the windows. The glazing should also be primed after it sets up [next day] The window should then be ready for 2 coats of your favorite exterior latex paint :D

Would it be best to try and take all the putty off between the glass and the window and start again with new putty or just try and repair and cover the old.

What ever will come off fairly easily chip off and replace.If it's hard and strong enough to resist that you can putty between those sections then prime and paint as stated.No need to force off sections that are still strong and tight(you'll probably break the glass trying).

Just what I wanted to hear.. Dreaded having to try and get the hard stuff off.

Looks like a messy hard job ahead still, has to be done.
