I live in the 'servant's house' next door to my mother, a 680 sf house that suits me fine in size, but I need assistance in choosing and installing new flooring.

I am looking at vinyl tiles over the wood and wood look alike products because I have dogs and want the toughness of vinyl, the ability to wet mop, and ease of installation.

I had toyed with the idea of sealed concrete, but that would entail a $200 a day rental fee for a terrazzo grinder, carpet is out of the question forever, and I don't feel competent enough to put down sheet flooring so I figured the tiles would be the best deal for me.

After removing the carpet due to urine damage due to a dog I was boarding, I am left with concrete with nail holes and a somewhat rough, uneven finish and the kitchen area has cheap vinyl tiles that are about 15 years old.

Can I place vinyl tiles over the old stuff, and will I have to put down a self-leveling cement product to even out the concrete floor?

If I don't have to go through the expense of renting a tool to chip up the well-glued, but cheap old tile, that would be great.

I've finished painting, now I would like to have a decent floor again! :)

Welcome to the forums! If you read the adjacent post, Allure flooring is a floating type floor that adheres to itself with strips. It goes down fast and has a high resistance to water and does well with pets and children; easily cleaned with damp mop. I would opt for a flooring like that over self adhering tiles.
