I was not sure whether to post here or the termite, wood boring board. Truthfully, I am not sure if this is actually a problem or not.
I have removed some sheetrock as part of a renovation project on the first level of my split level ranch home in upstate NY. The first level is almost entirely above grade. (At most, the lowest side is 18'' below.)
This is what I saw:

I don't think it is termites because everything I have read says there would be tubes following their path. Something else? Normal? The wall was insulated and I removed the insulation before I took the photo. (You can see a little of the paper still stapled to the stud in the photo.)
The home is about 50 years old. The insulation was not the pink stuff, but kind of grey. It had paper backing.
I knocked on the studs and there is no obvious hollow sound from any one of them. They all sound the same...including the the stud that shows none of the 'dust'. (This is the wall under the stairs, so it only has three upright studs. Two show 'dust', the third does not. The adjoining wall, perpendicular to this one, also shows some 'dust' on the one stud I have exposed.)
Recommendations? Can I continue with the renovation (thereby closing off the wall) and treat the insects around the edge of the home? Is this even an insect problem?
Thanks.
