I want to install a light fixture to the side of my house. It has vinyl siding, over a thin styrofoam and over the original shingles.

The side is very dark at night, because my trees block the street lights etc.

I need to know how to get started with this: how to find the best place to locate the fixture, what the screws will screw into [ pick any place?] where to run power from etc.

:thinker:

Thanks.

This will be tough to describe with out seeing the job but I will try.

The new light must be attach to a box on the house. Any splices that are done must be in that box/light. If you have an existing switch you can use that would be great. Otherwise you will need to pull power from an existing power source (but not the kitchen, bath or laundry) or pull a new one from your electrical service. Between the light and your power source you may want a switch to control the light. (Unless you do a dusk to dawn or motion light) This will again require another box. The boxes can be surface mounted, or recessed using remodel boxes or shallow pan boxes (as long a you don't exceed the wire fill)

This is kind of the basics to get you started. Let us know if you have more specific questions.

And with vinyl siding, use one of their box blocks, which are installed under the siding and provide a flat surface for the lamp to mount.
