I bought the Ranger last January ... very low mileage and other than a slight shudder when starting from a stop that I reported here, no problems. This morning it was lightly snowing so I flicked the 4WD switch to make sure it would work when the snow got heavier. (I doing about 30 m.p.h. on bare pavement) Nothing. No indicator light, no 4WD kick in. When I parked it, I put it in neutral and tried 4 low -- still nothing.

Before I haul it in for (expensive) servicing, could there be something I could check myself? Is there a fuse for this function?

I'm not much of a mechanic newtofta :) Are those numbers the actual fuse ID's or just the general locations?

So you think it could be just a fuse?

that is the fuse location,
do you have tha owner's manual?
it will give you a picture of the 2 fuse pannels.
if-not-/log on to autozone.com-/-regester your veh.& some other info.
they have an online shop manual-/ might have a picture.

I took your advice & registered with Autozone. When I went looking for help, I got this:

"Unfortunately, we do not have a repair guide for your 2006 Ford Truck Ranger 4WD 4.0L MFI SOHC 6cyl"

Doesn't look like they have much else for me either.

Drop back to a 2005..likely very similar except for body. Much more info on a '05.

I had a similar problem on my 02 Ranger a year ago last spring. I brought it to the dealer, who told me FOR FREE that it was the 4WD control module and it would be about $320 to replace.

I went to another dealer and ordered the part myself. Installation was as simple as unscrewing the kick plate from near the passenger's feet area, unscrewing two more screws to remove the module from the wall, pulling out the wires and plugging them into the new module, then putting it back together. In the end it was a 30 minute fix that cost me about $220. Not cheap, but much less than the dealer would have charged.

I did look into it a lot and found out that this is a somewhat common problem, and there is really no other way to get the replacement part than from the dealer.

'in' his situation, that would be like 'throwing' parts at it,& see if they stick.

I don't see it this way. Do you think the dealer diagnosis isn't solid ground enough to buy the part?

If the dealer says it isn't the module, then he shouldn't try to fix the 4WD this way. But I just can't see how it would be a bad idea to get the diagnosis from a highly qualified shop and then do the work yourself. If it doesn't work, you return the part and start over and maybe you've lost an hour or two of time.

'i' missed your point, i thought you were suggesting that he just go buy an control module.
yes,'if' you get it diagnosed.& you feel comfortable with doing the repair-go ahead.

You posted this two weeks ago, But when you said that you didn't even get and indicator light it made me think of the 4X4 switch or relay. (loose connection) Just another suggestion besides the fuses.

Yeah, would have been nice if it was a relay or fuse but it wasn't. I took it to a trusted mechanic who found it was the shift motor. He got it working for a few minutes but then it got stuck in 4-low. He replaced it and hardly charged me any labour since the dealer part was so expensive ($543 Cdn).

He told me the motor is built like a windshield wiper motor ... not much to it. Apparently, there are a couple of teflon or plastic bushings that wear out.
