Walls and Ceilings - question about joist hangers with drywall

I'm about to secure 2x10 joists with metal joist hangers, which will then have 5/8" ceiling drywall attached to the underside.

The protruding joist hanger may pose a problem getting the drywall to lay flat against the joists. Should the joist hanger be mounted a bit higher so that it is flush with the cross joist, or should the joist be flush with the cross joist, resulting in the hanger protruding downwards a bit?

Ideally you would cut an 1/8" off of the bottom of the joist at the end so the hanger sets flush but no more than it throws the drywall off [and it will be same all along the wall] it won't be noticable, especially after the wall/ceiling is finished.
