Heating season is here and I'm pulling down some very stiff attic steps to service my customer's furnaces.

Can I grease the wooden track that the single section steps run down, or would this cause the wood to swell?

What is the correct lubricant? I don't want to damage anything.

Hello Houston, I always wanted to say that :). Back to the issue.
Tough question, but I would not touch them. You are there to service the furnace and your kind gesture could come back to haunt you, say they side down too easily the next time the HO uses them and did not expect it. You become liable. Now maybe I'm old and overly cautious, but I have also been around long enough to see people getting sued for the darnedest things. Once some gets hurt, they look at everyone else possible to blame.

To answer the question, wax or graphite might help and not cause the wood to swell.

I agree. I am doing a bathroom for a customer, back door hinges really sing. I offered to do a quick lub and she said NO!!!!!. That is their early warning system. Makes no sense since they have an alarm that beeps when any door is opened.
