The toilet drain has a small hole where the lead pipe and brass ferrule joint is. What is the best way to do this. I was thinking to change the lead pipe to a PVC from the flange to cast iron. But the problem is how to joint the PVC to the cast iron.

Change the toilet flange & the lead bend to PVC. There are fittings to go into the donut end of the cast iron. Make sure you have a good torch to remove the brass & lead.

I did somewhat the same job a little while back. Melting out the lead seal can be dangerous and difficult. Be careful with a torch. I dug my lead out using a small drill bit and screwdrivers, ect. You should be able to knock the fitting loose and work it out once some of the lead is gone. Then I used a wire brush in my drill to clean the cast iron hub so it was somewhat smooth.

The rubber doughnut is made by fernco and is sold at Menards. It will slip over your PVC and then gets jammed into the cast iron hub creating a seal. I also put some RTV silicone on it to lubricate it as it went in and to help it seal on the old cast iron.

Worked great! Good luck!
