Our house is constructed using old beams, most of which are exposed to living areas. We have always been afraid to use any finish on them....but.....they are rough, dark brown and look very dry.....we are tired of this look and want them to look nicer (and gather less dust).

What can we use to give them a better look? Should we sand a little before doing anything?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

What do you want the beams to look like when finished?

If you want them to look like the rest of the woodwork you will need to sand them and then either apply several coats of poly or use an oil base enamel undercoater followed by 2 coats of enamel [latex is fine]

If you just want them to gather less dust, clean them and apply a couple coats of poly. The dust won't stick as easy and what does, can be removed easier than it can now.
