We have a refrigerator with through the door ice and water dispenser. Yesterday the water dispenser started dripping badly. I flushed it out drawing several gallons of water and the leak has stopped. Does the valve need to be replaced? I am really concerned it could start again especially if we are not home and cause a lot of damage.

Did it drip simply without using it, or after you used it? I know that with certain plumbing valve cartridges...even backflow preventers... (not sure if any of this applies with you).... that if pressure drops severely anywhere in the plumbing system (in your house or from the source supplying your house, say if the well pressure went way down or city pressure went down), it can temporarily leak, because there is not enough water pressure to push the seat up to the cartridge. And this explains why it can mysteriously 'fix' itself (since the pressure built back up). But this is a long-shot guess, as I am not sure of the mechanisms involved in that valve, or if say instead that it is electro-mechanical. ???
