Hi folks new to these forums.Wondering if someone can help me in diagnosing a oven that is overheating. The oven light does not go off probably until the oven reaches 500 degrees,no matter what the temperature is set at.
Thanks

The oven switch is shot. Absolutely. Common problem. Make sure first though that sensing bulb usually at back left side or rear of oven, is hanging in it's holder.

If that far off so it reaches that temp, if say even at 300 degrees, no calibration will even help. Calibration is good for maybe 25 degrees or so on an adjustment screw, or adjustable knob.

You will need to replace the oven switch that has the sensing bulb attached to it. You cannot buy them separately. You have to carefully uncoil the new wire/bulb when you get it, and reinsert through the top of the oven and hang it back on those 2 hangers, and transfer the 5 electric wires or so on the oven switch, to the correct labeled spades. Do not presume because spades appear to be in original location that the letters/numbers for each wire are the same. Only work on oven when known circuit breaker is off or it is unplugged. [On 240 volt appliances one 120 leg often is left live!!!! -only the other 120 leg is switched.]

Thanks for your quick reply ecman51, as far as you saying to replace the oven switch is that the same as the oven temperature gauge? In which is in the oven compartment on the top left side of the oven,In which there is a switch attached to it.Can you clarify this for me.

Thanks Again.

The oven switch is the thing with the numbers like warm, 200,250,300,350,400,450, 500, broil on it. And that also has that sensing bulb attached to it like a thermocouple, and that is how it is sold. I've had to replace several over the years. Then buy a good oven thermometer to check out the calibration. You must check it after it has been at a temp for a long time, and well after the first sequence after the 'element on' indicator light has gone out.
