it has two vertical slots but I don't know what kind of tool I need to screw it out...any ideas? I want to put a plain old pull up and turn drain in as opposed to this chain lever one which doesn't work.
thanks!

Probably a pair of thin long needle nose pliers would work. Plumbing supply houses may sell a spanner wrench for just that purpose, but for a one time shot, I believe I'd try the pliers first.

thanks for the tip, worked great....next problem or question rather. Tried to install a new popup type drain and there weren't enough threads on the old drain pipe that fed into the drain pipe...so I bought one of these kits to diy...I only really needed the stopper and the part that fits to the actual drain of the tub and feeds into the line, as circled here:http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4596/bathdrainrnc10102.jpg
Question is...I hooked it up and everything is working w/o leaks....but it occured to me that I installed the rubber washer on the TOP of the tub...right under the flange of the stopper....tightened it down flush with the curvature of the porcelin tub drain. On the underside it's just pvc fitted against the bottom of the tub. Like I say there are no leaks...but I am curious should I undo it and put washer on bottom, and plumbers putty on top?

yes. ithat would be the proper thing to do.
