I just bought a 4-foot track to replace an old, shorter track. However, four feet is too long for the existing space. Question: How do I shorten the 4-ft length(48") to fit into a 35" space and not cause a problem?

I doubt you can cut it but I may be wrong. Check with the manufacturer.

You may cut track using standard tools (hack saw, etc) You will need to re-install the end cap of the track and possibly shorten the conductors inside the track. I know this can be done on Halo and Juno track and I suspect others as well.

Use a 32-tooth hacksaw blade. The end caps usually have one or two small screws holding them in place. The internal copper "rails" may need to be shortened another half inch or so as Tolyn mentioned.
