My two labs are slowly destroying my yard. They run up and down the fence line and along the side of the house. There is no longer grass in this area, but rather dirt. Is there a stronger type of grass or other idea I can do that will hold up to two active dogs? I'll probably be tackling this next spring, so I have a little time. Beer 4U2

Never had contained dogs..but we had horses..they'd sometime do the same thing..and have seen plenty of neighbors and such who did have dogs. If they constantly run the same area..no grass will stand up to it. May as well paint the dirt green...
I'd look at something like a mulch in those areas...maybe the rubber stuff? Gravel/stone would get kicked everywhere w/Labs....durn webbed feet...lol!

My daughter has two dogs - a hyper-active 12 year old Husky and a 3 year old Pit Bull/Mastif mix. They have a fairly large back yard (but still to small) with chain link and when the dogs decide to run they will run or an hour between rests. They do run the course around the shed on alternate laps to get unused grass.
They have fought the problem for years and decided that you have to choose between the "pets" and the grass. The dogs won because of the companionship they give to them and their daughter (9 years old now). - The husky has been a big help getting the 3 snowmobiles loose when they get in the wrong situation, but if he is off the leash/control he runs straight in whatever direction he is facing until he drops ( being known to swim across several ponds/lakes while on a 3 or 4 mile free outing/escape). That is an example of what a pet can do.

Yeah, we already devoted half the back yard to them by dividing it with a 4 foot fence, but I just hate seeing my grass slowly turn into a mud pit. haha.
I thought about the larger gravel/rock idea, but figured it would get kicked into the grassy area because one of the dogs like explore what is underneith our homes slab..... ;) Mulch is an option and I might experiment with that option.
