I'm putting in a 6' tall fence along the back of our property.

I will be digging 15 holes, 3' deep using a 10" 2-man post hole digger/auger.

My plan is a coupla shovel fulls of gravel, drop the post in, dump in sakrete, and fill the rest back in with dirt.

If this is correct, then how much gravel should I order?

Ok..."couple of shovels" isn't a real good way to estimate. Do you want 2", 3", or 4" of gravel? It's easy then to figure it....

If I'm right...2" deep would be about 1/10th of a cubic foot...4" would be about 1/5"..etc. Just tell whoever yer buying it from how many cubic feet you want.

These are approximate......

I agree gravel at the bottom is the way to go but I don't think you want to order gravel just for those holes. The biggest portion of a gravel bill is the delivery. Last time I got gravel, the gravel was about $10 a ton but the haul bill was $100.

Now if you also need to gravel a driveway or something - that changes things:D
I'm just guessing, but I would think one scoop [1 yard bucket?] in a pick up truck bed would be more than you need.

At 10" diameter, a yard will totally fill all 15 holes and you would still have gravel left over!! A 1/4 yd. would put close to a foot in each hole. (At 10" in Diam., a yard is a tube that's 50' long!!)

Of course, it varies by where you are buying it from, but any of the 4 landscape yards that I shop at will load a MINIMUM of 1/2 yd. in the bed of a pickup (and you have to have a 3/4 ton truck or larger to get a full yard!) If you are hauling it yourself, you can get them to load less than 1/2 yard, but you're going to pay for the full 1/2. (That's in the range of $6 to $10 for a 1/2 yard, depending on what you're getting.)

Thanks for the info.

After reading this I was just going to buy the bagged gravel at the big box store. But that would jump me up to about 40 bucks for the gravel!

So I talked to a buddy who says he'll make use of what I don't use. I'll get a half a yard (the minimum around here).
