bought a dining room table-I believe it is cherry with a veneer top. I know it won't look perfect, but what can I do to make the gouges not look so bad? Because it is veneer and not wood, I assume it cannot be sanded. I bought this table along with five chairs at a thrift store for $90 and am trying to decide if I should let the store keep the table.
Any advice is appreciated.

Repairing gouges is one of the more difficult repairs especially without refinishing a piece. When there is veneer on the piece, that further complicates the repair.
Not being able to see how bad the gouge is, it's impossible for me to explain the process for repairing the gouge. The process for a small gouge or a deep gouge can be entirely different. This type of repair is best done by a professional.

Thank you for your reply. I don't know if this will change your reply, but I made a mistake-they are not gouges, they are deep scratches.
Thanks again,

Minwax (and others) make pencils of soft wax in various wood tones. This might be the easiest (and quickest) way to go, assuming you're not interested in perfection.
They should be available from any good paint store.
