I wish it was that ez. I tried that first.
The icon was not messenger, it was Windows live mail.
I ran a repair from add/remove and it fixed it but then another problem occured in that 'file>send link by mail, would not work.
My lap is ok with WLM so I better do a reinstall of the desktop. Both run identically, i.e., xp sp3 msie8.
Btw, have you heard whether or not WLM is supposed to run with my requirements? I googled Wlm as the default email program with xp and it seems to be a problem for some others too.

I use as little of Microsoft stuff as I can get by with. I find, however that Outlook is MS's better mail handler, and Thunderbird with Firefox is along the same lines. Never have used Live Mail.

Windows Live mail is working out fine.
I think you are better off w/o Windows but I am trying to be consistent as I started with it. With a little patience all seem to be working out well. Good luck with your system.
