What's a good, less-expensive wood to use to make raised panel cabinet doors out of if they will be painted? I'm assuming hardwood, and want a smooth finish, so oak would probably be out since the grain would show through the paint. Maple?

Poplar is commonly used for paint grade doors. It has a very tight grain and takes paint well. Maple would also be good, but probably too pricey because of its popularity. Good luck

I'll have to second cntrtop's suggestion on poplar. Less expensive than maple and takes routing better without boogers. Paints well, too.

me 3 :D

There are ways to fill the grain when painting oak but why buy oak if you intend to paint ;)
I'd recomend an oil base enamel undercoater and 2 coats of a waterborne enamel.

Thanks for the answers folks!

I agree marksr, why bother going to the trouble to fill the grain and paint such a lovely wood like oak?
