I am installing this awning and need to know that when I remove the cotter pin that holds the tube spring should the awning be extend or retracted.

you can't roll it down/out with those in there anyway. Just put camlock in roll down position and twist tube by hand slightly to make pulling cotter pins easier. That's provided it is already attached to hardware (arms) and attached to trailer.
