We bought a 23 year old house last year which has well/septic. The house has a water treatment system in the crawlspace that is (I am told) of good quality. It has a rust remover component along with the water softening and I think ph balancer. 2 sealed but serviceable tanks and the salt container which I periodically add to. It seems to work fairly well. We just came back from being out of town for 3 days so there was a period of inactivity with water usage. We came back today and the water had a distinct brown color to it. We ran it for a while and it did clear significantly. I know the system is on timers that run in the early AM hours. Off the top of my head, I think they are run through cycles every 2 or 3 days. I am about due to have the rust remover tank serviced so I called our well service company.
We have left for a few days before and never saw this issue before. Wondering if this is somewhat common with wells that have "sat" for a few days.
I will get some more information today or tomorrow when the well service company comes out and I will post any new info.

The update on this is it seems the issue started to clear but the well service company that installed the treatment system said I really was due for the replenishment of the medium in the acid neutralizer/iron removal tank. That was done today and the system will run through it's treatment cycle early tomorrow so I should be fine.
