My lower unit is already off and I need a new case, if I'm able to get one, is replacing the seals and transfering the gears a job for a pro or can a hands on mechanical guy do it?

Currently my prop and all of its workings are all together in one piece, just as it froze and poped out. I can see the drive gears back in the housing and i have a parts breakdown. I'm just wondering if this is a do-it-yourself project or definately not?

Take it in. Gearcases are one of the only things that shouldn't be done at home. I'm sure someone has done it but I wouldn't try. The special tools alone are close to $1000.

Have a look at the SEI drives (http://www.sterndrive.cc/marine-supplies.htm). I know several people who opted for replacement instead of rebuilding. None have had any problems with them.

1977 might be too old to get a replacement. They look pricey for what I have but I could see where in some cases it may be worth it.
