I have a sharp Aquos 32" LCD tv that periodically loses picture but has sound. Typically this occurs during the morning - afternoon and rarely evening - night. Oftentimes the picture will return for good after whacking the side with the power off. When the picture is out and you shine a flashlight on the monitor you can vaguely see the image. From my research there has been a lot of people with similar issues.

Realistically should be just invest in another tv?

You didn't say how old the set was.This is a common problem with most brands after the set is 2 to 3 years old.The fix ranges from fixing bad connections,inverter board,or power supply.Best to take it to the shop for an estimate.Tv prices have dropped a lot in the last couple years , so best to get an estimate and go from there.
