I had trouble with the forums search; I figured this was a common question.

I've got some steps going down but there isn't a hand railing. I want to add one - I just don't know how high it needs to be.

I looked it up online and my city uses the 2003 International Residential Building Code...but I haven't been able to find how high the hand rail should sit.

36" is something I've seen people mention in regard to deck railings - but I'm assuming indoor stairs would be the same?

34" - 38" as measured vertically from the stair nosing, and at a consistent height.

This is specific to my area but it is based on the International Residential Code.
