I'm about to build a 2x4 wall and was wondering what type of screws I should use. I initially planned on using nails, but saw builders using screws on a home improvement network was curious what they were using.

This was discussed on another thread..bet you were watching Holmes? There are no screws that I know off approved for framing in the US. If it's a non-structural wall you might be able to get away with deck screws, but it may greatly depend on whether this work will be permitted and inspected.

Best I can do.....

Yeah, we've been discussing this. Screws (in the US) don't have the strength of nails and shear too easily for common framing. So we don't use them. Mike Holmes uses them, but that's in Canada, and there may be some we aren't aware of. I guess the jury is still out.

You're exactly right Gunguy. I just got through watching Holmes. Nails it is. Are deck screws ok to use to secure exterior sheathing (OSB) to my new wall? Also, I will be using tar paper as opposed to house wrap as it is a very small area and house wrap is sold in $100 rolls.

Don't think there is a problem using deck screws for the sheathing..though I'm not sure it would be faster or more cost effective...again..inspections and permits would be the big factor.

Tar paper was/is used often under stucco. Make sure it overlaps correctly so any moisture or water penetration is directed over the next lower piece...just like shingles.

No expert...but I think I'm correct...

Thanks for the pointers. Finished wall today, put on sheathing (with deck screws) and covered in tar paper using galvanized roofing nails (with 3" overlap). Turned out nice. Now I'm just waiting on my window to come in. Once that is installed, I can slap on some siding and trim pieces and the exterior will be complete. Will be installing insulation and drywall tomorrow. Very small job, didn't get permits.
