I have a stone veneered chimney that needs flashing installed. I was thinking of cutting stone about 5" above roof and removing stone. I would then install a wood filler and caulk a flashing cap to cover the new step flashing I will install on roof. Kind of hard to explain but wondered f this would work.

The best way for you to do flashing is to cut grooves in the mortar joints running laterally. You will see the design if you look closely. You step down after going past each set of rocks. This flashing will be run under your shingles from bottom to top. Where the flashing meets the grooves in your rock, crimp the flashing over so it will fit into the groove. You may have to trim it a little for it to fit. Before inserting the flashing into the groove, use a little butyl rubber caulk in the groove and send the flashing behind it so it will seal.
