I had a propane fireplace installed and now I need to run a line form the propane tank to the fireplace. The owner's manual says, "Input Rating: 31,000/20,000 Btu/Hr."

The owner's manual says to use 1/2" iron pipe but I'd want to use 1/2" copper coiled tubing (b/c I need to run it through joists 18" oc).

Is there any reason I can't use 1/2" copper instead? Maybe the manual says iron to avoid certain limitations of copper that don't apply in my case? For instance, the fireplace is only 16 feet from the propane tank.

Thank you!! -Tony17112acst

Tony, aside from checking with local authorities on the use of copper, it is fine to use. If you are running part of it outdoors, you should consider the yellow coated copper for the run. Here in the South copper is used almost exclusively.

Thanks Chandler,

I did find a chart that lists the BTU capacity of copper which is a great help. If anyone finds this message in the future with the same question, PM me and I can send you the chart.
