Mix a solution of ammonia & water with a drop of detergent. Soak a white rag in the solution & apply it to the carpet. Rub it hard. Use a scrub brush if necessary.
It could be that the carpet has outlived it's usefulness, so be ready to remove it, if you don't like the results.
